Broadly defined as the exchange of information between people but specifically it is the process of transmitting and receiving message between two people; and occurs within the context of a socially supportive environment.

Low tech- devices
- Big Mack- is good to get started with communicating. It allows you to record any sound, adjust the volume, and the sound can be replayed by pressing the button.
- PECS- Picture exchange communication system. Instead of students using words to communicate students use pictures to communicate with others. It is a nonverbal communicator.
- Go Talks- is a battery powered ACC device used for a non-verbal or a speech delayed child. Simply take a overlay of pictures and place it in the device and the user just presses on the picture to play the message.
- Talking Photo Album - has a built in voice recorder which allows you to record short message on each photo's pages.

High tech devices
- ECO-2 - is a speech output display communicator that has a large display and keys to make communication accessible to those with visual or motor disabilities.
- proloquo2Go - is a speech out application for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod. This program comes with natural- sounding speech output and over 140,000 pre-programmed symbols.
- Eye Gaze System - is a eye tracking technology created for adults and children who are unable to control their body movement or speak. This system enables these people to speak, write, operate a computer and use different applications.
